As of a September 3, 2026 fetch, GemRate’s August 2026 Grading Recap (published September 1, 2026) reports total grading activity of 3.40 million cards for August. That sits below July’s 3.61 million on the same publisher’s July 2026 Grading Recap (published August 3, 2026) and remains well above August 2025 on a year-over-year basis (+47%). GemRate also notes 21 business days in August 2026 versus 22 in July 2026, which is why the per-business-day change (−1%) is milder than the headline month-over-month drop.

What did GemRate count for August 2026?

GemRate attributes August volume to five companies and flags one important CGC methodology note: about 65,000 semi-rigid AUTH cards were added to CGC’s population report in August. The table below uses only figures stated on the August recap page fetched for this article.

How August compares with July’s record pace

July was the recent high-water mark in GemRate’s monthly series at 3.61 million cards. August’s 3.40 million is a step down from that peak, not a collapse. PSA’s monthly total fell from 2.49 million in July to 2.20 million in August. CGC rose from 856,000 to 937,000. TAG edged from 57,000 to 58,000. Beckett slipped from 161,000 to 159,000. SGC moved from 44,000 to 42,000.

For collectors watching queues, volume is only one input. Company-published backlog and turnaround pages still decide what “in mail” means for a specific service. Recent Card Grading News coverage of those operational pages includes PSA’s August 25 backlog update, PSA Regular turnaround estimates, TAG’s August 26 backlog tracker, CGC Bulk working-day estimates, and Beckett’s September event drop-off windows.

What the CGC AUTH note changes about the headline

GemRate’s asterisk on CGC is explicit: roughly 65,000 semi-rigid AUTH cards were added to the population report in August. That does not erase CGC’s record monthly total, but it does mean readers should not treat every counted unit as an equivalent graded slab when comparing companies. When you cite CGC’s 937,000 figure, keep the AUTH qualification beside it.

Decision rules for collectors reading a volume print

Use the print as capacity context, not as a personal go/no-go.

A 3.40 million industry month tells you graders are still moving enormous throughput after a record July. It does not tell you the likely grade, fee stack, or service window for your specific cards.

Read company pages after the aggregate.

If you are deciding where to submit, pair this recap with the live service page for that company — paused tiers, event-only Base/Standard windows, limited TAG drops, and published working-day estimates still control the plan. Capacity explainers such as why pre-screening matters in a high-capacity year and condition-context pieces such as measured gem-rate context from scanned cards stay useful because volume alone does not grade your corners.

Separate YoY strength from MoM cooling.

August is still +47% versus August 2025 on GemRate’s page, even while −6% versus July. Planning off a single month-over-month headline without the year-over-year and per-business-day lines will misread the tape.

Do not invent scarcity or price stories from these totals.

Population activity is not the same as sell-through, grade mix, or secondary-market demand for any one card. This article reports GemRate’s dated counts only.

How this sits next to CardGrade.io’s volume explainers

CardGrade.io (an advertiser on this site, both under TCG Treasury LLC) has previously walked collectors through GemRate monthlies with a submission-decision framing — for example its June 2026 volume note. Card Grading News is covering the August print as industry news: the dated counts, the AUTH caveat, and how those counts sit beside company operational pages. We are not restating CardGrade.io’s commercial checklist here. For that lane, see CardGrade.io’s June 2026 volume explainer.

The bottom line

GemRate’s September 1, 2026 recap puts August grading activity at 3.40 million cards: cooler than July’s 3.61 million, still sharply higher than August 2025, with CGC and TAG marking company records and PSA still processing the majority of units. If you have cards in process, watch the grader’s own backlog and service pages. If you are still deciding whether to submit, use identity, condition, full cost, and published turnaround — not the industry headline alone.
