Checked on August 7, 2026: we installed both apps, read both companies' current marketing pages, and pulled six months of CardGrade grading data to answer a question readers keep sending us — should a collector pick CardGrade or HoloDex? The honest answer is that the question is slightly wrong. These two apps are built for different jobs, and the fastest way to be disappointed by either one is to buy it for the other one's job.

Two apps, two different jobs

HoloDex markets itself as an all-in-one collector app: scan, track, grade. Its own positioning makes clear where its center of gravity sits — card identification. That difference in purpose explains almost every difference in the feature lists below. It is also why the comparison favours a split verdict rather than a knockout.

What HoloDex genuinely does well

Credit where it is due: HoloDex's identification breadth is real and useful. If you cracked open a mixed lot of Pokemon, Lorcana and One Piece cards and wanted them catalogued tonight, HoloDex is built for exactly that, and it ships on both iOS and Android. The caveats sit at the edges. A video reviewer has flagged a gap in HoloDex's Magic: The Gathering database — we report that as the reviewer's claim, not our own test. And on the grading side, a thread in r/PokeGrading concluded that HoloDex's AI grading "accuracy and consistency are questionable" and that it is best used as a supplementary tool alongside human judgment. Why the grading half matters more than it used to

The cost of a wrong submission decision went up this year. PSA paused all four of its Value tiers effective June 2, 2026, leaving Regular at $79.99 as the cheapest open tier, and Beckett paused its Base and Standard tiers on August 5, 2026, with reopening expected around September 15. When the floor price of a submission is $79.99, a "supplementary" condition flag is not enough information to bet on.

Our own numbers show why. Card Grading News analysed 28,656 CardGrade AI gradings run between February 14 and August 7, 2026: only 23.9% predicted a PSA 10, and 14.4% predicted a PSA 6 or lower — cards that would have lost money at Regular-tier fees. Centering was the sole weakest subgrade on 36.4% of all cards, and on 39.0% of cards that missed a 10.
